The Walters’ Wedding Formals in Calgary’s Fish Creek Provincial Park

On the afternoon of Katherine and Colten’s wedding, we met at the Bow Valley Ranche gazebo where the ceremony would be taking place. Our Studio Manager Cally was a bridesmaid, so she spent the morning photographing the bridal party and getting ready for the day.

When we arrived at the ceremony location, officiant Abby Charchun of Married in Alberta was getting the guests ready for the big moment. She was an incredible help, as sometimes in a public space it is difficult to define where guests need to be.

Once everyone was seated and comfortable, the wedding party made their entrance. During the walk from the parking lot to the gazebo, we grabbed some pictures of the bridesmaids and groomsmen as they escorted each other in. Katherine and Colten’s adorable baby daughter Ivy came in with her dad. When Colten reached the gazebo, he turned, so he was facing away from the aisle.

Katherine made her entrance, and the ceremony began. It was a swift service, with loving personal vows, the exchange of rings, and a kiss. The couple signed their paperwork, and were officially pronounced husband and wife!

Following the ceremony, the guests moved into an opening in the fields, and we did a set of family photos. We tried to get Ivy involved, but her little friend had arrived, so she wasn’t interested in having her picture taken. After wrapping up family photos, we took a quick break to enjoy the warm sunshine.

The Creative Formals at Fish Creek Park

From the Bow Valley Ranche, we walked south across the bridge that spans Fish Creek. There was a run happening in the park that day, but we managed to photograph around the athletes. Fish Creek Park is gorgeous, and is a massive draw for photographers, especially on a sunny day. So, as expected, we weren’t the only group out that day. In our group we had our videographer Steve Casey a friend of Katherine and Colten’s, and Jay McDonald who is an up and coming wedding photographer and a extremely talented travel and landscape photographer. It was great to have their company, and we all seemed to meld well as a team.

We found a quiet wooded area, where we photographed the entire wedding party. After finishing up with them, we hung on to the bride, groom, maid of honour, and best man, for a few more shots.

With the newlyweds, we stepped to the edge of the creek and wandered onto the bridges. It was getting pretty warm outside, so we wrapped up quickly, giving the newlyweds a little time to spend on their own. While we waited for the limo to pick us up, we had a mini tailgate party in the parking lot.

The Walters’ Reception at The Baron

Then, they were off to the reception, and the first thing we did when we arrived was to photograph the details. The Baron is a modern industrial event venue in Calgary, with a unique style that harkens to the trendy atmosphere of New York’s meatpacking district.

At dinner, both white and blush wines graced the table, and a vegan buffet was served. Because both Katherine and Colten are vegan, it was important that their wedding meal reflect this. We were treated to a delicious buffet of BBQ portobello mushrooms, potatoes, kale salad, steamed beans, veggie lasagna, and more!

Once everyone had their meals, it was on to speeches. Things started with Katherine’s younger sister and maid of honour Breanne, who gave a rousing speech full of character and had everyone laughing. Her great sense of humour and jokes were an excellent way to kick off the evening. During her speech, she recounted some of her first memories of meeting Colten. Years ago, when Nexopia was king of the online social communities, Colten and Katherine first met. Katherine sported blue hair and a unique style, and when the family met Colten, they saw his style matched hers. At their first dinner, Colten, who was trying to make a good first impression, talked about all the ways in which one could cook and eat chicken. It was a Bubba Gump moment, Breanne says, and commented on the irony that now, Colten is strictly vegan. He doesn’t eat chicken at all.

Next, Katherine’s parents got up and welcomed Colten to the family. They noted that things haven’t always been easy, as life often has a way of putting difficulties in our paths. But, Katherine and Colten have used the hard times to grow into an even stronger couple, and are amazing parents to Ivy.

The bridesmaids came up for their speeches, and finally, Keenan, the best man, stood for his. He praised the role Katherine and Colten have played in his life and expressed his gratitude at their friendship and care. Around came the champagne, and everyone raised a glass to the newlyweds.

Cake cutting followed speeches, and then it was time for the party!

We had a wonderful day with Katherine and Colten, and we hope they cherish the images of their special day for the rest of their lives. Congratulations to the newlyweds!
